"Not ready to make nice" är en underbar låt skriven av av tre arga brudar som en reaktion till vad de utsattes för i samband med ett uttalande om dåvarande president Bush. På en konsert i London, 10 dagar före USA:s invasion av Irak uttryckte sångerskan Natalie Maines att hon skämdes över att president Bush kom från Texas (tillika bandets hemstat). I exakta ordalag följande:

"Just so you know, we’re on the good side with y’all. We do not want this war, this violence, and we’re ashamed that the President of the United States is from Texas."

Detta utlöste reaktioner hos en del som kallade uttalandet för fräckt och opatriotiskt. De fick hatbrev och dödshot. Deras skivor brändes i protest och musiken bojkottades. I april 2003 tog Dixie Chicks upp kampen mot smustkastningen. Bland annat poserade de nakna på Entertainment Weeklys omslag med kropparna täckta av de öknamn de kallats under tiden för smutskastningen. I mars 2006 släppte de denna låt som en reaktion till den den bojkott de utsatts för och allt de genomgått, den tar upp deras tankar kring kontroversialitet, förbudet mot deras musik på radiokanaler och yttrandefriheten. Låten skrevs dock för at kunna tolkas universellt men de sista raderna i en av verserna handlat otvetydigt om de dödshot bandet fick under sin Top of the World tour 2003:

"And how in the world
Can the words that I said
Send somebody so over the edge
That they'd write me a letter
Saying that I better shut up and sing
Or my life will be over."
